The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a test for partners in committed relationships who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere on the Hulu service. On the surface, it might appear like conventional body horror, but within Together lies a intense examination about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their characters, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The plot commences when the couple move from the big city to the country for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, sure, but that’s largely where the conventions cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their country house, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, weaving in moments of fever-dream horrors, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor avoids being hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
