Pat Cummins Set to Play a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations at play, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully starting in Perth. If not, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with setbacks in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to take a cautious route."
