Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing such medications need to be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting generally have a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the heightened weight return.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

People who have come off the jabs explain a intense resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Use

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers caution that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural management.
