The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of positions added to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release when the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
