Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.
The former head of state was sentenced of orchestrating a military coup in last fall and handed more than 27 years in jail, but he remained under house arrest pending appeals.
Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" emerged.
This involved attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a possible escape.
Court Filing Details Escape Concerns
In a filing authorising the custody, the magistrate said intelligence from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the surveillance device to ensure success in his getaway".
This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the protest called by his son.
His offspring, Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.
The senator wrote on social media on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I call on you to struggle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so backers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our land."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the magistrate's ruling was the potential of the former president's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a history of arranging to ask for protection through a embassy office", a announcement said.
The court filing underscores that the US embassy in the capital, the capital city, is situated around 8 miles from the former president's residence.
International Reactions
Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist US President Donald Trump, leading him to implement a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.
Bolsonaro is being detained in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will have a custody hearing on the next day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with digital surveillance.
They also asked that he be permitted to depart his residence for medical care, saying he required regular treatment for lung conditions and other ailments.
Context of Sentencing
The former president was determined responsible of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Lula.
High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which included plans to kill Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.
The conspiracy was prevented because it didn't receive the endorsement of the armed forces officials. His successor was took office without incident on January 1st, 2023.
But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, thousands of his backers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the national capital, Brasília.
The police took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.
The judges found that the protesters had been provoked by him whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, reestablish control and return him to office.
At the moment, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.
The former president called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
